Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home
In the Autumn term of Year 6, we will be studying the topic Home Sweet Home. In English we will be studying the novel 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio which looks at inclusion and celebrating differences.

This will then lead to studying biographies of famous people such as Mo Farah. The study of these people will help us to focus on their character, strengths and skills and we will link this to our focus on the 6Rs and key 'learning dispositions'

In Geography and History we will be studying the local area in more detail, finding out about our city and creating leaflets to persuade people to visit. We visit Bosworth Battlefield and learn how the battle started between the Houses of Lancaster and York that extended across England in the latter half of the 15th century. We also learn the battle formations and techniques that were used during The Battle of Bosworth.

Throughout Year 6, we encourage children to develop skills that will prepare them for secondary school. For example; children are encouraged to be self-directed in their learning.
During this topic, children research the mystery of 'The Princes in the Tower' and then carry out a court room debate to discover what they think happened to the princes.

Science will be the study of evolution and inheritance, which will challenge our thinking. We will create our own creature, which will adapt to a particular environment and learn about famous people who are linked to the science of evolution.

We continue to learn and develop many skills in PE; supporting our school priorities of Growth Mindset and the 6Rs. Children take part in daily activities which promote mindfulness and well being. For example; yoga, meditation, breathing exercises and spending time outdoors.

Linked to children's well being, Year 6 also visit Warning Zone where we learn many ways to keep us safe in life. These include: fire safety, water safety, alcohol and drugs and ways to be safe online.
