Our Creative Curriculum
Children learn best when they are inspired by and engaged in their work, and at Brocks Hill we have devised a creative curriculum in which many key skills and attitudes are taught through exciting topics.
The Foundation Stage follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) national curriculum.
In Years 1 to 6, children learn by studying a creative and connected curriculum which is organised into termly topics. The different subject areas are woven into these topics. We believe that children are engaged by and respond to learning that develops, stretches them and excites their imagination We aim to create Irresistible learning experiences!
We have built and shaped our curriculum around the concept of a tree:
Children learn, practise, develop and refine a range of skills and attitudes to learning in our school. Some of these skills are specific to certain subjects; others are universal key skills and support learning in all subjects. These key skills underpin learning throughout the school. We aim to equip children with these key skills so that they can be as successful as possible in the future.
There are six key 'Learning Behaviours’ or ‘Attitudes to Learning’, called The 6 Rs which are fundamental in our school. These are:
These form the basis of success in all aspects of school life and are vital to life-long learning.
There are also a whole range of important other ‘Learning Behaviours’ or ‘Attitudes to Learning’ which we explicitly promote throughout our curriculum. These attitudes to learning include the following:
- Risk taking
- Taking initiative
- Open mindedness
- Self directed
Additionally, linked to all aspects of our curriculum are key ‘Over-arching skills’. These are skills which the children learn to apply across our curriculum. They are part of our approach of the ‘Mastery’ curriculum, where skills are developed and learned in depth, and applied in many different contexts. These skills include the following:
Analyse, Describe, Hypothesise, Sequence
Anticipate, Determine, Identify, Simplify
Apply, Discuss, Infer, Solve
