We believe that fairtrade can make a big difference to the lives of children and young people throughout the world and are working towards Fairtrade School status.
To achieve this we have to meet 5 criteria:
1. Make the School Council a Fairtrade team to make decisions about fairtrade in school ~ done 2. Adopt a whole school Fairtrade School Policy ~ done 3. Commit to promote, use and sell fairtrade products wherever possible ~ we already use fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits and other items where possible at school fairs, parents’ events, fundraisers, etc. and in class cooking 4. Include fairtrade lessons in the curriculum for at least 2 year groups ~ this year we’ve done lots of work on fairtrade ~ see the pictures below for more details 5. Promote and take action for fairtrade in the school and whole community ~ our Summer World Fair, Christmas Fair, Sustainability evening, website, etc. all raise the profile of fairtrade within the school and the wider community. We are working closely with Beauchamp and Gartree to promote fairtrade throughout the campus and Mrs. Swan is part of the community team which has made Oadby a Fairtrade Town. |

In a wonderful project linking the whole campus, Beauchamp students went into Gartree to teach the students about fairtrade ~ Gartree pupils from GAP (Gartree Against Poverty) went into Brocks Hill to take an assembly on fairtrade and use the Chocolate Game with Year 4 and Brocks Hill’s School Council went into Beauchamp’s Childcare Centre to tell a story about an unfair birthday party, to highlight the fairtrade symbol and to play a fairtrade banana song. All the children involved in teaching did a wonderful job. |

During Science Week the children looked at recycling and science. Year 1 talked about why we make bags from plastic and how important it is to use them lots of times. They looked at some fantastic recycled crafts which have been made from recycled materials and the made posters about recycling bags decorated with chickens with plastic bag feathers. |

JAM Club created designed fairtrade chocolate wrappers using yummy chocolate from the Co-op |
|
We’ve had a display of fairtrade crafts made form recycled materials on the Key Stage 1 corridor to inspire and delight the children. During Science Week and Big Arts Week recycling and fairtrade have been promoted, and many Big Arts Week crafts involve using recycled materials. |

Some of our children went to Beauchamp to learn how to bake biscuits using fairtrade ingredients. |
